How to block Instagram on iPhone

Reels has no bottom. The feed ends, the suggestions do not, and a thirty-second check becomes forty minutes without a single decision that felt like one.

Three ways, honestly compared

You’ve probably tried the first two already.

Screen Time works until the limit appears, and then it offers you a button that says "Ignore Limit". You set the passcode, so you know the passcode.

Screen Time

Free, already on your phone

How
Settings › Screen Time › App Limits › add Instagram › set a limit.
How long it holds
Until the limit appears and offers you “Ignore Limit”. You chose the passcode, so you know the passcode.

Fine until you really want back in.

Delete Instagram

Free, and immediate

How
Hold the icon, remove the app, sign out on the web too.
How long it holds
About four days, for most people. Reinstalling takes seconds, and your account is exactly where you left it.

You have to decide again every morning.

Warden

Free to try

How
Pick Instagram, set the hours, choose one person to hold the key.
How long it holds
Until your rules say otherwise, or until the person you chose agrees to let you out early.

The only one that still holds at eleven at night.

Four steps, once

Blocking Instagram with Warden

Setup takes about two minutes. The last step is the one that matters. After it, you can’t unlock early on your own.

  1. 1

    Give Warden Screen Time access

iOS asks once. Warden uses Apple’s Screen Time framework to put the shield up, and can’t block anything without it.

  2. 2

    Choose Instagram

Pick Instagram from the system app picker. iOS hands Warden an opaque token, so the app never learns which apps you chose.

  3. 3

Set the hours or the daily limit

Give Instagram a schedule, a daily allowance, or both.

  4. 4

    Choose your Keyholder

Send one person a link. Once they accept, getting out early is their call.

A routine that works

Evenings back

Every day · 7pm–11pm

Instagram closes for the part of the day it takes most of.

What your Keyholder sees
Your streak. Nothing else.
What Warden sees
Not that it was Instagram. iOS never says.
If nobody answers
It stays blocked.
In an emergency
Override works instantly, offline, no approval.

Common questions

Blocking Instagram, answered

Can I block Instagram without deleting the app?

Yes. Warden puts a shield in front of it using Apple's Screen Time framework. The app stays installed, your messages and account are untouched, and it opens again when your rules say it can.

Can I unblock Instagram myself if I really need it?

Not on your own. You send a request to your Keyholder and they decide. There is also an emergency override that always works instantly with no approval, because a phone you cannot use in a crisis is not a safe phone. Using it resets your streak and tells your Keyholder.

Does Warden see my Instagram activity?

No, and it cannot. iOS hands apps an opaque token rather than a name, so Warden never learns which apps you chose. Your Keyholder sees less again: your streak, and nothing else.
