Screen Time

Giving your partner the Screen Time passcode: what actually happens

It is free, it takes two minutes, and it is the right first experiment. It is also the setup most people abandon within a month, for reasons that have nothing to do with willpower.

What it does well

It removes the passcode from your own head, which is the single biggest weakness of self-managed blocking. For the first couple of weeks that alone changes behaviour.

It costs nothing and needs no third app. If you have not tried it, try it before you buy anything.

Where it comes apart

Four failures, roughly in the order they arrive.

  • They have to be there. Every unlock needs them physically present or on a call, at exactly the moment you are least patient.
  • Nothing is recorded. Neither of you can tell whether this was the first time this week or the fifth, so the conversation resets every time.
  • The passcode can be recovered. Screen Time passcode recovery runs through your own Apple Account, which you control.
  • It makes them a gatekeeper rather than a supporter. Typing a passcode into your phone at 11pm is a chore with no upside for them, and chores get dropped.

What a dedicated arrangement changes

The mechanics of the block are the same, because every app in this category is built on the same Apple framework. What changes is everything around it.

They answer from wherever they are, in a couple of taps. There is a record, so neither of you is guessing at how often this happens. There is no passcode for you to recover, because there is no passcode. And an emergency override exists that does not require waking them up, which means saying no is a smaller thing to do.

Try the free version first

Set a Screen Time limit, have them set the passcode, and see what happens over two weeks. If it holds, you have solved the problem for free and you should stop reading.

If it breaks in one of the four ways above, you now know precisely which part you need fixed, which is a much better position to buy from.

Common questions

Can my partner set a Screen Time passcode remotely?

Only through Family Sharing, which is designed for a parent and a child account and brings a lot of other behaviour with it. For two adults it is usually the wrong tool.

Is the Screen Time passcode recoverable?

Yes, through the Apple Account on the device. That is a deliberate safety design by Apple, and it is the ceiling on how strong this setup can be.
